In September 2009, Volkswagen launched a creative initiative to encourage people to take positive action by making it fun. In this video, stairs are converted into a piano. The result? 66% more people used the stairs.
Check out the Bottle Bank Arcade, which encourages recycling. The result? In one night, over 100 people used the bottle bank arcade, while a nearby bottle bank was used only twice. (Aww… I feel sorry for it.)

This handsome Taurus XL rocket will carry NASA’s Glory spacecraft into low orbit. Glory’s mission is all about climate. It will collect data on aerosols, black carbon and the effect of the sun’s irradiance on our climate. It makes it all hot ‘n’ stuff! Guess they want more details. :) It’s scheduled to launch March 1st 11am (EST) from Vandenberg Air Force Base in Santa Barbara County.

Choi + Shine Architects designed these giant figures out of electrical pylons. The architects claim they require only minor alterations to existing pylon design. They consist of a few major assembled parts and a series of pre-assembled joints, which can be used to create different configurations.
Just imagine… You’re driving along an Icelandic highway. “Wow”, you think, “I really dig those things. They’re so much more interesting than those old boring… Hey! Wait a minute… Wasn’t that one kneeling before?”
Not sure how I missed this self-sustainable chair back in 2008. It was designed by JooYoun Paek. As you walk, your feet compress pumps and send air through the super-sexy plastic tubes, resulting in a large inflated bubble at your butt. I think I speak for every earther, when I exclaim, “A gigantic butt! Just what I’ve always dreamed of. And huge clown-like feet. Right on.”
I think this is more of an art piece than anything else. It’s really creative and incredibly silly. Watching our poor model clomp around in the video is a bit painful.
Incredible photos of Russian rocket debris, taken by Jonas Bendiksen.
Due to the proximity of the Baikonur Cosmodrome, several times a month flaming pieces of space junk rain down in Kazakhstan and the Altai Republic, Russia.
The area has become something of a shooting range, with at least 2,500 tons of rocket parts littering the ground. Originally, the Soviets were diligent about retrieving material, but after the fall of the Soviet Union, efforts were scaled back.

Interesting sustainability program at Wake Forest University. Some colleges and universities are distributing reusable take-out containers to their student body. After using them, students return them for cleaning and sanitizing. Food Waste Focus has a nice summary of the issues involved to implement.
Ideas for re-using all kinds of stuff.
Biosphere 2 serves “as a center for research, outreach, teaching and life-long learning about Earth, its living systems, and its place in the universe.”

Jay Shafer’s adorable small homes. They range from 65 - 837 square feet.
I like Sarah Susanka’s books on small homes. By small, she means “not as big as you thought you needed”. She also writes about new urbanism, sustainability and preservation.
